II. Dünya Savaşı'nın yaşandığı dönemde hayata geçirilen Köy Enstitüleri, savaş ekonomisi koşullarında yaşamanın tüm zorluklarına inatla yalnızca köy öğretmeni yetiştirme sahasına değil toplum kalkınmasına da hizmet edecek bir şekilde dizayn edilmiştir. Bu çok yönlü projenin uygulayıcıları ise enstitülerin kurucuları, idarecileri, öğretmenleri ve usta öğreticileri olmuştur.Literatürde Köy Enstitülerinin kuruluşu, öğretmen yetiştirme modeli, eğitim sistemi ve ulusal kalkınmaya katkıları gibi konularda bir hayli çalışma bulunmakla birlikte bu projenin uygulayıcılarının biyografilerini ve/veya enstitülere katkılarını ele alan spesifik çalışmalar ise son derece kısıtlıdır. Köy Enstitüleri sisteminin işlemesine katkı sağlamış olanların önemli bir kısmı ya satır aralarında kalmış ya da hatıratlarda ismi geçmediği sürece unutulmaya yüz tutmuştur.Bu çalışmada Cumhuriyet'in kuruluş döneminde müzik çalışmalarıyla ön plana çıkmış ve Halkevlerinden Köy Enstitülerine kadar pek çok kültür ve eğitim kurumuna hizmet etmiş Bedri Akalın'ın hayatı ve çalışmaları incelenmiştir. Araştırmada literatür taraması, arşiv taraması ve doküman analizi yöntemleri kullanılmıştır. Ayrıca Bedri Akalın'ın oğlu Mete Akalın ile kişisel görüşme yapılarak da birinci elden kaynaklara ulaşılmıştır. Bu çalışma sonucunda daha önce biyografisi kaleme alınmamış bir eğitimcinin özel ve mesleki yaşamı akademi dünyasına kazandırılmıştır
